The Ss of Autism, part 3

Over the next several weeks, we’ll be blogging the ABC’s of ABA therapy. Today, here are the Ss, part 2.

Speech-language pathologist

A speech language pathologist is a professional who is skilled in human communication. Speech language pathologists are hired to help the child focus on communication, not speech, so they can learn how to better understand their environment and how they can make an impact on it.

Speech/language therapy

Speech or language therapy is a program that is designed to either correct or improve speech or language communication problems. This type of therapy may include verbal communication as well as non-verbal communication.

Stereotyped behaviors

When behaviors are repeated many times by a child with autism, they can be referred to as stereotyped behaviors.

Stim

Stim is short for self-stimulation, which is the term used to describe behaviors whose sole purpose is to stimulate a person’s senses. People with autism usually share that stims serve a calming function, or that stims help in shutting out unwanted things like loud sounds.
